Chapter 283 "Vanessa, just hang in there a little longer. I promise, Daddy's going to get you out of that holding cell soon." Nathan clung to this rosy fantasy, and a confident grin spread across his face.

After all, who could ever resist the lure of money? In Nathan's mind, the only reason that cold, ruthless Sean had thrown Vanessa behind bars was because she'd disrupted Aberdeen's birthday gala and made Sean Foster lose face in front of everyone. But Sean was a businessman-and there's no businessman in the world who doesn't love money.

As long as the price was right, Nathan refused to believe that Sean wouldn't eventually give in and release Vanessa.

Once they made it out of the country, Nathan planned to hire someone to sabotage Sean's Eastborough Project, making sure Sean lost every last penny. Nathan had never been the forgiving type-anyone who crossed him paid dearly, sooner or later.

His triumphant smile had barely flickered to life when a car sped up behind him and screeched to a halt.

The car door was flung open, and a woman-her head wrapped in bandages, looking more like a wild animal than a person-lunged out. Only one eye was visible, burning with a venomous fury that locked onto Nathan like a snake eyeing its prey.

"Nathan-!" Her scream was raw and feral. In an instant, she was in Nathan's face, and without warning, she slapped him- hard. The sharp crack echoed in the air.

"You killed my father. You got Ethan thrown in jail. You madelose Claire. And now you've sold the house I gave you just to bail out Vanessa—that bastard child from your affair! I swear, I won't let you get away with this!" It was Adah. She was still dressed in a hospital gown, her skin ghostly pale, almost translucent. Blood seeped from behind the bandages over her ruined eye, staining the white cloth a ghastly red.

Her whole face was twisted with rage, making her look less like a woman and more like something dragged straight out of hell.

She clawed at Nathan, her fingernails like talons, raking deep scratches down his cheeks.

Nathan, trapped in his wheelchair, couldn't even dodge-he just sat there as Adah's nails tore bloody lines into his face.

Desperate, Nathan shouted, "Shaw-get this lunatic off me, now!" Shaw-real nGarnett Brown-sprang forward, determined to pull Adah away. After all, Vanessa was his own daughter, and Nathan was just about to buy her freedom. There was no way he'd let Adah ruin everything.

But before he could reach her, a strong hand seized Garnett's arm in a viselike grip.

Startled, Garnett looked up. It was Victor, one of the top doctors from Cresthaven General Hospital.

"What the hell are you doing here?" The reason was simple: After Nathan had left the hospital, Adah, frantic, had insisted on following him. Victor happened to run into her in her panic, and without hesitation, he drove her all the way to the Foster estate.

Victor glared at Garnett Brown with open disgust. Just yesterday, he'd caught Sophia and Garnett together in a car in the hospital parking lot-caught them in the act, no less. The sight had left him completely stunned.

Word about the bitter feud between Adah and Nathan had already spread like wildfire around the hospital. In her rage, Adah had exposed all of Nathan and Sophia's dirty laundry-Vanessa's true parentage, Nathan's affair, and the fact that Nathan's driver was actually Sophia's brother. But Victor still didn't know Garnett's real identity; as far as he was concerned, this was truly Sophia's brother.

So when he'd seen the two of them together in the car, doing things no siblings ever should, he'd felt nothing but revulsion. Victor was a man of strong principles; nothing disgusted him more than such flagrant moral corruption.

Still gripping Garnett's arm, Victor didn't hesitate—he swung and landed a solid punch straight to Garnett's face.

Blood spurted instantly from Garnett's nose, and before he could recover Victor's knee drove hard into Garnett's groin. With a howl of agony, Garnett doubled over, clutching himself and collapsing to the ground.

Furious, Nathan shoved Adah aside and screamed at Victor, "Are you out of your mind?!"
