“You always said | was your favorite! How cyou switched teams so fast?” Alan teased with a playful grin,
affection shining in his eyes.
Nina didn’t even bother answering. She slid her chair closer and wedged herself between Melvin and Jessica,
then tilted her head and asked, “When are you two getting married and having a baby?”
“How do you know they’re definitely going to have a baby?” Alan chimed in, clearly trying to ruffle her feathers.
“What if they don’t want kids?”
“Then I'll be their baby,” Nina declared confidently, without missing a beat. Jessica laughed and reached over to
ruffle her hair, her eyes warm and full of affection. It was obvious she loved children.
Laughter and warmth filled the dinner table, and for the first tin a long while, Melvin felt like he belonged—
like he had finally found home.
After the meal, Hugh, who had clearly been thinking about Melvin’s circumstances, brought up the topic of the
wedding. “So, about the wedding—what are your plans? Are you inviting your parents?”

hadn’t dared to bring up himself. “Thank you.”
“Can | be the flower girl at your wedding? And can my brother be the ring bearer too?” Nina asked, her voice
small but hopeful.
Jessica, clearly enchanted by her, smiled warmly. “Of course you can! With your help, Melvin and | are bound to
live happily ever after.”
