“Four hundred thousand. That would be enough for the down payment,” Kate answered.
“I could always ask Jessica's parents for three million. That way, your daughter could pay for the whole house
upfront.” Melvin looked at her, testing her resolve, wanting to see her reaction. He had never done anything like
this before.
Kate's eyes sparkled at the suggestion. “You mean it?”
“But | have a condition.” Melvin surprised even himself with how torn he felt in that moment.
For a split second, he couldn't tell if her answer left him cold or brought a strange sense of closure.
“What do you want from me?” Kate asked.

that, we go our separate ways. No calls. No visits. Nothing.”
Kate faltered, caught between greed and something that might have been regret.
