Fay didn't tell Sylvia where they were having dinner-she just said she wanted to surprise everyone.
Sylvia had already resigned herself to spending a small fortune that night, so she didn't ask any more questions.
Right before clocking out, she got a text from Lester.
"Wantto swing by and pick you up later?"
"No need, thanks to your generosity | just got a fat bonus-taking the team out for dinner tonight."
"So you're not gonna treat your favorite sponsor to dinner? That's just not right."
"I'm off tomorrow. I'll cook for you instead."
Sylvia typed the reply in a flash and hit send without a second thought.
Ever since she'd taken Edwin's advice, she'd beccomfortable letting Lester pursue her. They weren't
officially together, of course, but there was definitely an unspoken understanding between them.
Just like any regular couple, they'd chat, grab the occasional bite together, talk smore.
It was simple, ordinary-and Sylvia found it strangely comforting.
On her screen, the "Lester is typing..." bubble lingered for ages.
Finally, his one-word reply popped up:
"Deal."
Sylvia couldn't help but grin, picturing Lester hunched over his desk, agonizing over every word. He could be so
decisive at work-just not in texts.
Her thoughts were interrupted by Fay's voice beside her.
"Sylvia! Let's get going."
Snapping back to reality, Sylvia realized the workday was over. She stood and grabbed her bag.
"Which restaurant is it? I'll grab an Uber."

Fay patted her snow-white coat, smirking. “No need. Ride with me."
Sylvia eyed her suspiciously, but most of her colleagues had already paired up
and driven off. She could only smile politely. "Thanks."
On the way, Fay took a couple of weird turns, then gunned it down a deserted road. Sylvia felt ber

"Scared thought you were braver than this. Aren't you the one who'll go after anything you want?" s
Sylvia steadied herself, then glanced sideways at Fay. "Have we met before?"
Fay just laughed and didn't answer.
A second later, she slammed on the brakes.
Sylvia's head nearly hit the dashboard, only saved by her white-knuckle grip on the door.
Fay burst out laughing. "You look kinda cute when you're frazzled."
Sylvia took a deep breath, smoothed her hair, and said calmly, "Ms. Langley, you'd better cup with a good
excuse. You're speeding, stopped in the middle of the road, and breaking about a dozen laws. This isn't Europe-
just because it's quiet doesn't mean there aren't cameras." s
She barely finished before a police motorbike pulled up beside them.

Fay clutched a foot-long stack of tickets, nostrils flaring.
Sylvia just stuck out her hand and hailed a cab. "Con, my treat. Let's grab a taxi."
Once inside, the driver flicked off his "available" light. "Where to?"
Fay slid off her sunglasses and glanced at Sylvia. "Paradise Pavilion."
Sylvia frowned, hands tightening around her purse.
Fay smirked, "What's wrong? You look nervous.”
"I'm fine."
Sylvia stared out the window, feeling annoyed. Was this Fay another one of
Rupert's old flings from his days abroad?
