Chapter 8 During this time, she had stopped fighting with Aaron about Cynthia Lynwood. This realization struck Aaron like a blow to the heart.
"Serena, Cynthia returned because..." "That's where we had our first date." Serena interrupted, stepping out of the car. She had no desire to hear Cynthia Lynwood's name.
Aaron followed her out.
Serena stood in front of a food stall selling fried cheese curds.
As the heir to the Vance family, the wealthiest in Alderburg, Aaron was usually shielded from such everyday delights.

This particular stall was the first place she had introduced him to the joys of street food. She still remembered the way Aaron had scrunched up his nose when the fried cheese curds were served, his expression as if he'd just encountered a peculiar alien dish.
"Two orders of fried cheese curds, please," Serena called out, snapping back to the present. Just like old times, she ordered two servings.
"Sure thing, they'll be ready in a jiffy. You two can have a seat," the stall owner replied, momentarily distracted by the striking couple in front of him.
Serena settled into the sspot she had occupied years ago. Even after four years, she remembered every detail, right down to the way the forks were arranged.
Aaron watched as Serena meticulously cleaned the disposable fork with a disinfectant wipe. He swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing slightly. "You know, we could be like we were at the beginning," he said.
No arguments. No silent treatments. Just peace.
Serena's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Maybe we could, if I didn't know about Cynthia Lynwood." But life doesn't cwith maybes.
"Cynthia's situation will be resolved soon. We can go back to how things were!" Aaron insisted, clasping Serena's hands tightly.
Only then did he notice how cold her hands were. Panic clenched his heart, and he held her hands even more firmly. "Serena, trust me, we can..." Serena's heart wavered.
"No chance. Tonight, I'm..." Before she could finish, Aaron's phone rang. It was the ringtone he had set specifically for Cynthia Lynwood. Serena laughed softly at herself for almost believing Aaron's empty promises, thinking they could rewind time. Aaron had already answered the call. But instead of Cynthia, it was her doctor, Matthew Grayson. "Aaron, you need to get to the hospital. Cynthia's had a heart attack; she needs you urgently!" Aaron's expression turned grave. "I'm on my way," he said, turning to leave.
Serena watched his retreating figure, a faint smile still on her face. Her mood remained unchanged.

Whether Aaron showed up today or not, she had planned to revisit the places she and Aaron used to explore when they dated.
Back then, she had no idea Cynthia Lynwood existed. She thought Aaron loved her too, which was why he indulged her whims. Until later- Serena left the bustling food street, glanced back one last time, and then- Headed straight for the airport.
At seven-thirty in the evening, Serena arrived at the airport.
While waiting for her flight, she received a message from Aaron.
"Serena, are you still at Alderburg University? I'm coming to find you!" Serena didn't reply. Instead, she blocked Aaron on every platform.
