Chapter 401 Not the Hero, Just the Idiot
The master quietly closed the cabin door, then turned to see Lucas leaning against the hallway wall, his face
pale as paper.
“You heard everything?” she asked evenly.
Lucas’s fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white. “Three years ago... she almost, because of

“Almost lost her life,” the master cut in coldly. “That girl’s been stubborn since she was a child; once she makes
up her mind, not even nine oxen could drag her back.”
A gust of sea wind blew through the porthole, tousling the strands of hair on Lucas’s forehead. His voice came
out hoarse. “I swear, I'll never let her risk her life foragain.”
The master’s sharp gaze locked onto his. “Lucas, | don’t care if you're the head of Hawthorne Corp or some
powerful figure. To me, you're just the brat my apprentice nearly died saving.”
Lucas straightened, meeting her eyes without flinching. “I understand.”
“She’s suffered more than enough since she was little,” the master said, her tone softening. “She sees you as
the most important person in her life; that’s why she keeps throwing herself into danger for you.”
“I know.” Lucas’s voice trembled slightly. “From this day on, my life belongs to her.”
The master pulled a needle from her sleeve and twirled it lightly between her fingers. “Remember what you said
today. If you ever betray her...” The needle flashed in the sunlight, cold and sharp. “...I know a hundred ways to
make you wish you were dead.”
Instead of backing down, Lucas took a step forward. “If that day ever comes, you won't have to do a thing; I'll
end it myself.”
They held each other's gaze for a long moment before the master finally put the needle away and nodded in

“Master...” Lucas called as she turned to leave. “Sloane’s body... can she really handle a long flight?”
The master sighed. “That girl's heart is set on finding her birth parents; forcing her to stay would only hurt her
more.” She paused. “Don’t worry; I'll stay with you both until she’s fully recovered.”

Lucas bowed deeply. “Thank you.”
Connor personally arranged a ship and assigned an elite team to escort them the entire way. Before departure,
he patted Lucas on the shoulder. “After everything Dr. Rivers did to help us crack the case, this is the least we
can do.”
During the journey, the master gave Sloane acupuncture once a day; her color returned with visible speed.
“Master, shouldn't you rest for a while?” Sloane asked on the fifth session, worry flickering in her eyes as she
noticed the beads of sweat gathering at her master’s temples.
The master shook her head, her hands steady and precise. “Don’t move; you'll throw off my focus.”
Silently, Lucas handed her a warm towel and brought over a cup of tea. He noticed her fingers beginning to
tremble ever so slightly.
