The smile faded from Samantha's face, and after a pause, she said quietly, “Forget it. Don’t worry about it.” She
turned, discreetly avoiding Adrian as he tried to move closer. “I'm a little tired. I'll go rest first.”
“Samantha...” Adrian reached out to catch her, but she slipped away with a quick sidestep.
“Adrian, you should rest early too.” Her tone suddenly turned polite and distant, the warmth in her voice
replaced by formality. Even the way she called his nsounded stiff, stripped of the warmth it once carried.
Watching Samantha walk upstairs, Adrian froze with his hand suspended in midair.
Military Hospital...
Sloane learned from Conor that Adrian had been at the hospital. Her eyes darkened. The timing was far too
coincidental. Adrian must have cbecause Samantha sent him to dig for information.
But she didn’t have tto deal with that now.
Sloane stood at the observation window of the isolation ward, rubbing her temples in exhaustion. Seventeen
vials of blood samples sat neatly on the lab bench, each one glowing with a strange blue light.
“Still nothing?” Maxwell asked from behind her, his voice low and heavy.
Sloane shook her head and tapped the glass with her finger. “Standard antidotes don’t work at all. The toxin
mutates every twe treat it, like it's staying one step ahead of us.” She pointed to the latest brain scan.
“What's worse is that it's begun to erode the hippocampus. If we don’t stop it soon, these patients will lose their
memories forever.”
A nurse suddenly pushed open the door. “Dr. Rivers, Dr. Maxwell-the patient in bed 4 is crashing!”
The elderly man began to cough violently, his oxygen saturation dropping fast on the monitor. Sloane rushed to

“His oxygen’s down to eighty-five,” head nurse Jesslyn said as she adjusted the oxygen flow. “Lungs are full of
wet crackles.”
Sloane pulled back the man’s eyelids and saw severe conjunctival congestion. “Run a CBC and inflammatory
markers. Prepare high-flow oxygen therapy.”
The old man’s breathing grew more rapid, his chest heaving hard. The monitor let out a piercing alarm- his heart
rate spiked to 140, and his body temperature shot up to 102.6°F.
“The hyperinflammatory response just kicked off,” Sloane said, flipping through the chart. “Hypertension and
diabetes. He's high risk.”
“Dr. Rivers-his fingertips are turning bluel” a nurse cried.
The ends of his fingers had gone dusky purple-classic hypoxia. The CT already showed ground-glass changes
spreading across both lungs.
“Prepare for intubation and put him on a ventilator,” Sloane ordered without hesitation. “Alert the ICU to
