“I told you already,” Samson said immediately on the other end of the line. “Sloane should be with fill right
now.”
Lucas’s grip tightened around his phone until it was on the verge of cracking. His expression darkened into
something terrifying.
Sensing the silence, Samson picked up on the shift instantly. “Lucas, did something happen? | can cover
right now if you need me.”
“No need.” Lucas hung up as soon as he finished speaking.
Samson had a gut feeling something wasn’t right. He quickly called Jill. “Hey, Jill, are you with Sloane right now?”
“Yeah, we're having dinner.” Jill frowned. “Why? Do you need to talk to her?”
“No, it's fine. You two enjoy your meal.”
He ended the call, more confused than ever.
Was he just overthinking it?
But the next day proved his instincts had been spot on.
A photo of Larry and Sloane leaving a restaurant together made the front page of the business section.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe paparazzi had captured the shot from a tricky angle-Larry was bending down to open the car door for
Sloane, and their faces were so close their noses nearly touched. Sloane even had a faint smile at the corner of
her lips.
The headline was splashed in bold red: “Lucas’s Ex-Fiancée Caught on a Night Out With Houston Group CEO.”
The caption pulled no punches: “Sources say that shortly after breaking off her engagement with Lucas, Sloane
was seen dining with his business rival. The pair left the restaurant together, displaying an unusual level of
intimacy...”
Lucas slammed his tablet down on the desk, hard. His coffee cup rattled and spilled, brown liquid staining the
papers beside it.
The smile on Sloane's face in that photo stung his eyes like a knife.
“Sir, the board meeting is about to begin,” his assistant said carefully.
Lucas held up a band to silence her
He dialed Andrew. “Pull that headline immediately Find out who's behind this stunt His voice was ice- cold. “And

Meanwhile, Larry had seen the article too and quickly ordered his assistant to take it slown.

The assistant returned shortly. “Ms. Whitney, we were too late. Someone already took care of it.”
It didn’t take Larry long to guess who.
He waved it off. “That's fine. You're dismissed.”

The next day, Sloane stepped into a sleek black sedan that drove straight through the military district
gates.
“Ms. Sloane, we invited you here today to thank you,” Conor said solemnly. “Over the past three years, your
elixirs have helped our soldiers recover from their injuries with incredible speed.”
“You're too kind, Conor. | was just doing what | could.” Sloane smiled softly, brushing a stray strand of hair
behind her ear.
Conor poured her a cup of tea himself, his tone turning serious. “But there's another, more urgent reason we
asked you here today.”
The door opened. Two soldiers carried in a young woman, her face pale as a sheet. Her right arm was heavily
wrapped in bandages, but dark purplish blood had seeped through.
“This is Melody, a resident of a border town. She was injured three days ago while washing clothes by the river.”
Conor gestured for the soldiers to remove the bandages. “Our medics can’t do anything for her.”
As the last of the wrappings coff, Sloane shot to her feet.
The wound on the woman's arm was horrifying-raw, discolored flesh surrounded by skin turned a sickly gray-
black. Veins near the site had twisted into a web of deep red and purple.
