Chapter 501 Interrogation And Investigation
Nico listened attentively, thinking that Cedrick’s analysis sounded valid.
He asked “Cedrick, if he genuinely wants the Newton Residence, would you assist him?”
A grim look flitted past Cedrick’s eyes. He remained silent, neither confirming his assistance nor explicitly refusing
it.
Having been with Cedrick for quite some time, Nico understood what he meant and refrained from asking further.
When they returned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cedrick promptly instructed Nico to investigate Caylie’s
death.
Nico meticulously interrogated every housekeeper and bodyguard in the Newton residence.
However, the investigation that lasted half a day yielded no substantial results.
Caylie’s autopsy results were also out, revealing that she had taken an unknown drug.
Examining the results carefully, Nico asked the forensic examiner, “Can you check which drug responsible for her
asphyxiation? Can you also find out when she took it?”
Was
Shaking his head, the forensic examiner replied, “We didn’t find any undissolved residues in Mrs. Newton’s body, so
we can’t identify it. We only inferred that she took an unknown substance because we found traces of her being
poisoned. However, I think that it isn’t a legal substance obtained from overseas. Regarding when she consumed it,
I can’t give a specific time because I don’t know what substance she took. Some drugs have an incubation period,
making it entirely plausible for the victim to die only a few days later.”
Nico fell into contemplative silence.
In that case, Charles remained under suspicion as he might still be present during the time of the crime.
Should Craig insist that Charles had stolen the key and gone to the top floor during the welcome party, it would be
hard to defend Charles.
Lost in thought, Nico returned to Cedrick’s office and reported the forensic findings to him.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtCedrick’s countenance grew grave. “Summon everyone in the Newton residence for a second round of questioning.
This time, I will interrogate them personally.”
Throughout the afternoon, each servant was individually escorted into the interrogation room at the Federal Bureau
of Investigation.
Cedrick asked, “How’s the relationship between Charles and Mrs. Newton?”
He repeated this question with every individual interrogated.
The gardener responded, “I’m not entirely sure. I’ve only been working at the Newton residence for a relatively
short time. It’s only been two years. During that time, Mr. Charles was busy with the Central Intelligence Agency
and rarely came back home. It was only recently that he returned to the Newton residence. However, I don’t know
how his relationship with Mrs. Newton is. Since his return, he has never mentioned her nor asked Mr. Craig if he
could visit her.”
A housekeeper who had worked at the Newton residence for fifteen years said. “Their relationship was quite
troubled. Mrs. Newton really hates Mr. Charles because he isn’t her biological son. He got scolded by her quite a
few times when he was a child. Perhaps, he killed her out of resentment.”
Those who had spent a significant amount of time at the Newton residence shared similar accounts.
They shared about how Charles had been mistreated by Caylie during his childhood. Due to Charles history of
competing for power, being disciplined by Craig twice, and doing bad deeds, they all believed that Charles had
poisoned Caylic.
The interrogation lasted the entire afternoon. Soon, it was time to end work.
All the evidence and witness accounts were disadvantageous to Charles.
Feeling frustrated, he reached for a cigarette, only to be reminded of Gwendolyn’s strict no-smoking policy.
The two little kids at home must not even catch a whiff of smoke.
If he got discovered, he would be doomed.
Hence, he passed the cigarette to Nico, who retreated to a corner of the interrogation room to smoke.
The last to be interrogated was Lucas.
As he was working at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he could be summoned over quickly. Hence, he was put
to the last.
As usual, Cedrick asked, “How’s Charles’ relationship with your mom?”
Lucas’ eyes reddened at the mention of his mother. After recollecting himself, he said, “Really bad. When we were
young, she’d find excuses to hit Charles whenever Dad was not around. Charles hates my mom…”
His account was similar to what the other housekeepers at the Newton residence said.
Cedrick massaged his temples, looking slightly exhausted.
Lucas continued, “Ever since my mother stopped going downstairs as frequently, she barely interacted with
Charles. Although he dislikes my mom, he doesn’t hate her to the point where he’d poison her. Moreover, if he truly
had a toxic substance, it’s more likely that he’ll inject it into Craig.”
Intrigued, Cedrick abruptly widened his eyes. He raised his head at the same time as Nico and stared at Lucas.
“You are the only person I have encountered today speaking up for Charles.”
Feeling slightly awkward, Lucas clarified, “I’m not speaking up for him. I’m merely speaking the truth as I know it. If
he wants to kill my mom, he’ll have to steal the key to the top floor and risk being discovered by Craig. The security
on the top floor is very strict, so barely anyone can access it. If he did that, he’d just be giving himself away. The
costs of doing that are simply too high.”
Having been on many missions with Jasper, he became much more logical and critical.
Cedrick smiled. “You sound convincing. In that case, who do you think killed your mom?”
Lucas bowed his head and fell silent.
After thinking for a long time, he finally replied, “I don’t know. Although I think that Craig’s been acting strangely
recently, he can’t possibly do something like that.”
Snulling out his cigarette, Nico stepped forward and interjected. “Nothing is impossible. People’s hearts are more
complex than we imagine. Some individuals can become consumed by the pursuit of power. losing themselves
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmalong the way. We never know when we’ll be betrayed by those closest to us. The Federal Bureau of Investigation
has dealt with many similar cases, as you probably already know.”
Lucas didn’t rebuke. Instead, he fell silent.
He couldn’t help but recall Craig instructing the servants to bury everything on the top floor the previous night. He
had taken away that mysterious glass tube…
Caylie ended up dead in the middle of that night.
However, Lucas did not say anything. He kept his head bowed with a conflicted look.
Soon, it was the end of the work day.
Noticing that something was weighing on Lucas’ mind, Cedrick suggested thoughtfully, “It’s getting late today. Take
some time to think it over. If you come across any other leads, feel free to inform me anytime.”
Lucas hesitated and asked, “Mr. Jenson, what crimes would Craig be guilty of if he’s really the culprit?”
Cedrick straightened his uniform and responded coldly. “We’ll handle it according to the law. If he’s really the
culprit, he no longer deserves to be called a decent human being, having done something so atrocious for his
personal gains. Whatever punishment awaits him, he’d have brought it upon himself.”
“I understand,” replied Lucas, lowering his head and regaining a calm expression. He stopped speaking.
Despite his resentment towards Craig for sending him to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and subjecting him to
such torment, Craig was still his brother. The Newton family had also thrived under Craig’s leadership.
Lucas couldn’t bring himself to accuse Craig.
Observing the subtle change in Lucas’ expression, Cedrick emphasized sternly, “Lucas, failing to report what you
know makes you an accomplice. Even if Craig is the culprit, the victim is still your mother. The suspect being locked
up and interrogated is your brother too. Everyone involved is part of your family. Consider it carefully.”
Lucas’s gaze flickered. He nervously tightened his grip on his pants before nodding.
Cedrick did not remain there either. He turned around and left the interrogation room with Nico silently trailing
behind.
Once they were inside the car heading toward the Jenson residence, Cedrick instructed, “Keep a close eye on
Lucas. I have a feeling that he knows something. Perhaps he will be the breakthrough.”
