Chapter 444

I was in the kitchen making coffee when | felt the vibration of my phone from my back pocket.

My gran checking to see if | was still coming over for breakfast. | sat at the table and messaged her back. | would

drink this cup and then head out. Jake still wasn’t back yet, and | had heard nothing.

He was busy dealing with what happened, probably wasn’t in the right frof mind and blaming himself. No

one was to blfor what happened. It was unfortunate but expected to happen at spoint.

Running a hand down my face | stifled the yawn trying to escape. | was tried today, and my head hurt a little. |

pushed myself to my feet and poured the remainder of my coffee down the sink.

Slipping my arms into my jacket | grabbed the keys to Jake's truck and opened the front door. Alanna’s car was

parked in the driveway, but she was nowhere to be seen.

Which means she was blockingin. | chewed the inside of my cheek as | turned the key in the door and made

sure it was locked. | can only assshe was with Jake.

How could | turn up at my grans empty handed? | didn’t want her to think | expected her to cook. She should be

resting like the doctor told her to. | walked down the drive and crossed the street heading to her house.

My aunt Claires car was parked on the street, so she was here for breakfast as well. | thought she'd have headed

hby now. Unless she had extended her stay because of grans fall.

| must have stood for at least 5 minutes arguing with myself on whether I should knock or just walk in. And then |

stood for a furthermore 5 minutes thinking about how stupid | was being.

The door opened in front ofand | took a small step back.

“Hi”. | spoke.

“Leah”. George smiled. “Have you been out here long?”.

“No”.

| shook my head.

It was awkward. | could feel it and I hated it. | wasn't sure if

it was always going to feel that way or not. He was my grandfather but not really.

“Go inside she’s in the kitchen with your auntie Claire”

| nodded my head as | walked my way inside.

They were sat at the island drinking coffee. The smell of bacon and pancakes hit my nose, and my stomach

growled

“Right on tsweetheart”.

She had made enough food to feed the street. | swear she didn’t know the meaning of rest.

“Csit down and eat there's plenty of food”.

Still, “I can see that”. | frowned. “You're meant to be resting”.

“I wouldn't even go there”. My Aunt Claire spoke. “I've already tried, and she doesn’t listen”

“Don’t talk aboutlike I'm not here Claire. | am fine and | do rest, but breakfast wasn’t going to cook itself”.

“We could have ordered in”. | sat on the empty seat and reached for the coffee pot.

“Nonsense”.

‘ My gran sighed. “You girls need to stop worrying so much about me. Now eat up before it gets cold.

“Is George not joining us?”. | asked.

“Just us girls”. She smiled. “He's off to the garden center.

The have an offer on 2 for one house plants”

House plants? Did that mean she was staying?

“So, you're planning on staying?”. | pursed my lips as | noticed my Aunt Claire stopped filling her plate.

| didn’t say it out of badness. | just wanted to know.

“Would that be, okay?”. She asked.

It wasn’t up toon whether she stayed or not. | couldn’t stop her even if | didn’t want her here. She may have

signed the house over to me, but | didn’t see it that way. It was still her house, and it would probably lay empty if

she wasn't here.

Jack and Lacey made the decision to stay with his parents and Carter and Alanna were happy where they were.

“Yeah”. | nodded. “It’s your house”. | grabbed a plate and started filling it.

“But do you wanthere?”.

| thought we had already gone over this?

“Yes, of course now can we talk about my tea later with Charlotte and Jake’s gran”. | made a face.

“Wedding bells”. My aunt Claire laughed.

“That's not funny”. | glared. “But seriously why am | so nervous around her?”.

“Because she’s special to Jake”. My gran smiled. “And I'm guessing he’s, her favourite?”. | nodded.

“But | bet she already loves you”. She spoke.

“That's what they tell me”. | laughed.

“Then you have nothing to be nervous about”. She topped up my coffee and took her seat. “Just be you,

sweetheart, and if she loves you already, then you have nothing to worry about”.
