Chapter 255

Hubert's face fell after he heard Evander's words. However, he kept a smile on his face.

“I appreciate your effort for paying great attention to my matters, Evander.”

Evander ignored the words that came out from Hubert's gritted teeth. He remained indifferent and hostile, not even

bothering to look at his cousin.

“I'm sure you won't be able to conceal the deeds that you have done even if you want to. I just hope you'll know

when to restrain yourself. There will be more than just a warning given to you if what you've done affects Golding

Group's reputation.”

Hubert looked at Evander intensely as his lips pursed tightly. As liis hands hung on either side of his thighs, he

couldn't help but clench them into fists.

He truly despised Evander's high-and-mighty attitude and liis disregard for all those around him.

On the other hand, Evander felt frustrated at the situation. At that moment, he was unwilling to be courteous and

pretentious toward anyone. He kept a cold expression on liis face, not intending to greet the others at all.

The atmosphere became frigid and tense again as the elders of the Golding family looked at Evander with a hint of

accusation in their eyes. However, no one dared to speak out against him.

They had no choice but to bury their anger deep inside as each of them pondered how to take advantage of the

situation and gain power within Golding Group.

Not long after, the doors to the operating room opened, and the doctor finally walked out.

Gazing at the crowd in front of him, the doctor took off his mask and smiled.

“Congratulations, Old Mi s. Golding is all right. However, she must take care of her health after this, and she must

not suffer any further emotional turmoil.”

“What a relief! Grandma's fine. Evander. I was scared out of my wits just now.”

Olivine patted her chest as tears brimmed in her eyes. She swayed slightly on her feet and leaned against Evander.

Evander could not push her away in time. However, liis expression softened gradually after he heard the good

news, and even his tightly knit eyebrows began to relax.

It was as if there was a crack in the massive dark hole in the depths of liis heart, allowing sunrays to shine through.

If anything really happened to Valerie, Evander would be plagued with guilt for the rest of his life.

“Everyone, Old Mis. Golding has regained consciousness and has been transferred to the regular ward. You are

welcome to visit her in groups,” the doctor reminded them once again.

“All right. We'll be right there shortly. Let's see what Old Mis. Golding needs, and we'll tiy to help as much as we

can!”

Hubert's father. Julius Golding, had already spoken up. His words then prompted the others to follow him to Valerie's

ward.

“Grandma needs to rest right now.” Suddenly. Evander blocked their path, liis voice cold and emotionless. “Thank

you for your concern, but the Golding family doesn't need anything at the moment. I'll take care of Grandma.”

The crowd was displeased with liis words, especially Hubert, who deliberately taunted him, “If it weren't for you,

Grandma wouldn't have flown into a rage and got sent to the hospital. And now you're saying you want to take care

of her? You're trying to take credit for this, aren't you?”

“If I may ask, did you actually see what happened?” Evander asked in a nonchalant manner as he lifted his gaze

slowly.

The remarks Evander made caused Hubert to appear embarrassed. He hesitated for a moment before speaking.

“This is the truth!”

“Oh, really?” Evander drawled, his words laced with a hint of mockery. “What's the truth, then? Words are but wind,

and what one sees is the truth!”

“Y-You—”

Hubert's face was filled with rage. Clenching his fists, he wanted nothing more but to hurl them at Evander's face.

“Send off our guests, Sylas!” Evander interrupted Hubert, then turned and walked toward Valerie's ward.

He emanated a domineering aura all over liis body, and no one could take their eyes off liis majestic figure.

Evander was never afraid of Hubert assaulting him, as the latter would not have the courage to do so.

He had been humble and polite toward the elder of the Golding family all these years.

He did not realize how liis so-called family was discrediting him until Sylas showed him the form for the equity

recognition meeting last year.

It was then that he finally experienced the unfathomable and dark tactics of those sly foxes.

Since that was the case, Evander did not need to respect the others. The best way to deal with them would be by

giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Conflicting emotions raged inside Hubert's heart as he looked at Evander's retreating figure.

His heart was filled with anger, resentment, and hatred. For so many years, he had been the eldest in the family,

and yet he had been oppressed all the time.

Hubert bent down and stayed near the staircase for a long time. There were cigarette butts scattered all over the

floor. He fumbled in liis pocket for another cigarette.

Cough! Cough!

Just then, the door was opened. A loud and ear-piercing cough was heard.

Hubert quickly turned around to look. After catching sight of the figure, he quickly stubbed out liis cigarette behind

him before bowing respectfully.

“Father.”

Julius glanced at liis son's current condition and shook liis head helplessly. He reminded Hubert in a disappointing

tone, “Look at yourself. Besides getting into scandals with women, you only smoke to kill time. It's no surprise that

you are always crushed beneath Evander's feet.”

Hubert's face turned slightly pale after Julius' words hit his sore spot. Gritting liis teeth, Hubert said. “Father. I simply

refuse to accept the reality. After all these years. I've always thought my ability was on par with Evander's, yet

everything I did paled in comparison to his accomplishments. Is it truly pointless to put in the effort?”

A look of defeat could be seen on his face as he spoke.

Julius' expression softened as he patted Hubert's back firmly and said in a deep voice, “The fact that you're capable

of saying something like that proves that you haven't gone astray from your frolics. If you compare the shares

within Golding Group, you're definitely out of Evander's league. However, we can develop our powers through our

connections.”

Hubert's eyes lit up. “What do you mean by that?”

Placing both hands behind him, Julius walked toward the staircase and looked ahead.

“Golding Group usually holds a shareholders' meeting quadrennially. and they will re-elect those who are in power.

Evander's brilliance outshined everyone in the past, so I have been slow to act because of our unstable foundation.”

“I'm afraid I don't quite understand. Please guide me on this.”

“But now, everything's changed. After Golding Group encountered a financial crisis last year, Evander had

surreptitiously withheld dividends, causing dissatisfaction among the shareholders.” A crafty glint appeared in Julius'

eyes as he looked at Hubert solemnly. “The shareholders' meeting will be held next week, and I have already made

all the necessary connections for you. It's up to you to take care of the rest.”

A raging fire ignited within Hubert. He balled liis fists, his eyes filled with determination.

“Don't worry, Father. I will not disappoint you.”

At that moment, a phrase popped into his mind.

Those who have stood at the highest spot for a long time aren't scaiy at all. As a matter of fact, those who have

been oppressed for the longest time will be the most frightening ones once they are given the chance to display

their abilities!

Meanwhile, in the ward, Valerie seemed to have aged over ten years overnight. Her messy hair was dotted with

large patches of gray hair.

In the absence of glamorous makeup and elegant, luxurious jewelry, her face was evidently wrinkled.

It was impossible to conceal one's age as time passed.
