Chapter 311

“No idea,” Mark replied honestly.

“So why are you filming?” Rebecca asked.

“For evidence,” Mark explained seriously. “If Tom gets hurt, we can use this video to make the other guy cover

Tom’s medical expenses. If Tom knocks him out, this video proves the guy's guilty.”

Rebecca realized Mark and Tom really were quick-witted.

Especially Tom.

The moment that middle-aged guy crushing over, Tom didn’t hesitate for a second-he just called him

“Dad.” outsmarting even her, the boss.

As she thought about it, Rebecca sent Tom a message, telling him to go along with the police and call her

whenever he needed help.

Just as she hit send, Max Quinn walked in from outside. Clad in a black suit, he looked even more cold and

businesslike than usual. He locked eyes with her and said, “I'll make sure you get the full story about what

happened out there.”

“Okay,” Rebecca nodded.

“This has the company’s organization chart and profiles for the leadership,” Max added, passing her the

documents. “Go through them, and when you're done, I'll take you to meet everyone.”

Rebecca took the folders and said, “Sounds good.”

Rebecca’s mom had already run through everybody's details with her at home, so she pretty much had

everyone's info memorized. Still, even if she already knew it all, she had to go through the whole routine for

show.

Twenty minutes later, she skimmed through all the files.

Her mom's version had been way more thorough-this one was just the bare essentials.

“All done, Rebecca said as she handed the files back to Max.

Over the next hour, Max led her on a full tour of every department in the company, introducing her to the

managers and briefing her on how things worked everywhere. By the tthey finished, Rebecca had met

almost everyone on those files-just a handful were out on business trips and she didn’t get to see them.

Once they wrapped up, Max glanced at her. “Anything else you'd like to know? Just say the word.”

“I need to let all of this sink in first,” Rebecca replied, not giving any more requests. “We can cover the rest

another time.”

Max just nodded, saying nothing more.

After exchanging a couple pleasantries, he walked them to the door.

They kept it all business and distant-you’d never guess they were family, let alone cousins.

“Ms. Jensen,” Mark said casually as they stepped into the elevator, sounding more like he was just chatting than

asking a real question. “How cyou didn’t go check out the finance department earlier?”

“Finance is the core of any company, but with where | stand right now, it’s not really my place to poke around in

there,” Rebecca answered, knowing exactly how things worked. “When Max was introducingto everyone, |

could tell a few people clearly had opinions about it-I could read it on their faces.”

At a smaller company like Meditech, things were a lot simpler-not much in the way of office politics or scheming.

But the Quinn Group was a publicly-listed giant, and when Max gavequite the formal introduction despite

at least not with Max around.

“You're right,” Mark said, opening the car door for her.

Rebecca slid into the seat.

Just as she was about to ask Mark to swing by the police station and pick up Tom, Mark, already behind the

wheel, suddenly remarked, “Looks like you're really leveling up.”

‘What is he even talking about?‘ Rebecca blinked, totally confused.

She shot him a suspicious look.

“Give it stime, and you'll be an absolute powerhouse of a boss,” Mark said, poker-faced. “All those people

throwing shade at you now? They're gonna have to treat you with real respect.”

“What's this all about?” Rebecca asked, sensing something odd in his tone but couldn't quite put her finger on it.

Mark glanced at the rearview mirror. “You really didn’t pick up on that?”

“Pick up on what?” Rebecca looked at him, still lost.

I'm just trying to hype you up,” Mark replied.

“See, I'm your bodyguard, assistant, and driver all in one. | really don’t want to end up out of a job, so I'm

rooting for you to really level up and make your mark. Just promiseyou won't let anyone's opinions or gossip

drag you down or make you unhappy,” Mark added.

Is he actually saying this out loud?‘ Rebecca thought, momentarily lost for words.

She just stayed silent.

Right then, Rebecca realized that people like Mark-those who always seem so serious-are the ones whose words

cut the deepest.

“Take the next Dum Rebecca said, switching topics quickly. “Let’s go pick up Tom.”

Mark stared in unter confusion

He just looked at her, utterly clueless.

Seriously? Why do we have to pick up Tom? What, did he lose his legs or just forget how to get home?‘ Mark

thought with a roll of his eyes.

Even so, money’s money, so he reluctantly made the U-turn toward the police station. Almost there, he called

out, “Ms Jensen.”

Rebecca was busy replying to her messages. “Yeah?”

“Don’t go easy on your team, Ms. Jensen, Mark said seriously. “Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.”

“Got it,” Rebecca replied coolly.

“Mm.” Mark nodded.

“When you're clocked in as my driver or bodyguard, unless | ask, keep quiet,” Rebecca said.

Mark just stared, baffled.

Rebecca just smiled, “Hey, your jobs are to drive and keepsafe. That's all | need from you.”

Mark started to say something, but ended up swallowing his words.

Rebecca waited a bit, half expecting him to talk back or grumble, but when nothing came, she shot a glance at

the back of his head.

Mark stayed silent, just playing the role of the perfect employee.

They finally pulled up in front of the police station. Only then did Mark turn and look at Rebecca, his usual jcy

expression now looking a little bit... hurt. “Ms. Jensen, do you really like Tom that much?”

Rebecca blinked, totally thrown off.

“He’s only been with you for less than a day, and you've already calledout because of him more than once,

Mark said, his eyes fixed on hers. “You're totally playing favorites.”

Rebecca’s mind went completely blank for a second.

Is he actually pulling the sad puppy-eyed act on me? Is this what people mean when they talk about someone

being all cute and manipulative for attention? Rebecca thought, somewhere between amused and battled.

‘Didn't | just take your advice? Rebecca shot back

Mark didn’t skip a beat, just gave her that sdistant look he'd always had, and after a couple seconds, said,

“You're right. You're great. I'll go see what's taking Tom so long”

With that, he got out of the car.

As the door shut, Rebecca caught him looking a bit awkward for once, which was unusual for Mark.

About five minutes later, Mark was outside, waiting with Tom.

Tom hopped straight into the driver's seat, firing up the engine without missing a beat.

“Hope | didn’t keep you waiting too long. No trouble after | left, right?” Tom asked.

“None at all. Rebecca said. “Everything was smooth.”

“Glad to hear it,” Tom replied.

With a half-smile. Tom waited until Mark had settled in, then called out, “Ms. Jensen.”

Yeah?” Rebecca replied.

Tom shot her a cocky grin. “So, would you say | responded quickly enough? Did | pass the trial?”

“You did.” Rebecca said, shooting a look at the back of his head. “But I've got a question.”

Tom, catching on instantly, gave her a knowing smirk. “Letguess-you’re wondering how | figured out those

two women were working with that guy, and how | dealt with them so fast, right?”

“Yeah.” Rebecca answered, not beating around the bush.

Honestly, Tom was like he had a cheat code unlocked-seeing everything unfold before anyone else had a clue.

Sure, both Mark and Tom stepped up as bodyguards—and Mark figured Tom was alright-but when it cto stuff

like this, you couldn't just let it slide. Rebecca knew she had to ask what needed asking if she wanted real trust

instead of trouble later on.

Looked like, if nothing went sideways, both of them were gonna be her go-to people down the road.

“Ms. Jensen, Tom flashed her a carefree smirk, “are you sure you wanna grillwhile I'm driving? The steering

wheel’s in my hands, you know.”
