“Don’t bother with him,” Amelia said, instantly catching what Rebecca was thinking. “Just treat him like some
delusional lunatic-basically a free workhorse you never have to care about.”
Rebecca didn’t say much. She just nodded. “Okay.”
‘Grown-ups fighting... Best not to get involved, Rebecca thought to herself.
Her mom was way more experienced and capable than she could ever hope to be, so Rebecca trusted her
choices without question.
“Lethold my pride,” Amelia said, arms wide open, her eyes gentle and full of warmth.
Rebecca paused, a little stunned.
Amelia wrapped her in a hug.
Rebecca melted into the warmth, losing herself for a moment.
‘Mom said... I'm her pride,’ Rebecca thought, her heart blooming with emotion.

“You've been through a lot lately,” Amelia said, her hug warm and soothing, her heart aching for her daughter
after all she’d been through. “Just take it easy, okay? Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
There were things Amelia didn’t say, but that didn’t mean she didn’t care.
Watching her beloved daughter, whom she’d raised and cherished, go out to brave all sorts of hardships,
Amelia’s heart filled with worry. In moments like this, she just couldn't understand how Sebastian could've been
so relentless and cold in forcing her for his own goals back then.
But none of that mattered anymore.
She already had Rebecca-the one who truly mattered, her family.
“Okay,” Rebecca replied.
too! | want a hug!” Samuel ran in, his chubby little hands reaching up and his big round eyes sparkling
cutely.
Rebecca and Amelia smiled at him and pulled him into their arms.
The family basked in warmth and joy, perfectly content together.
Ten minutes later.
Rebecca got shooed out of the cozy little family circle.

At the desk, Samuel pointed at the computer and asked Amelia, “Grandma, | still don’t really get this part, I've
tried a bunch of times, but I just can’t crack it.”
“Letshow you,” Amelia said, settling next to him, her fingers flying over the keys. “This bug is pretty well
hidden. We'll clear it first, then dig deeper.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtSamuel clapped his hands. “Grandma, you're amazing!”
Amelia gave him a doting smile. “You're the best, sweetheart!”
Rebecca: 77?
She stared at the lines of code on the computer screen, totally lost in thought.
Her gaze shifted between her mom and her son, and when Samuel's tiny hands started clacking away at the
keys, Rebecca couldn't hold it in anymore. “What exactly are you guys doing?”
Amelia put her finger to her lips. “Shh.”
Samuel was totally engrossed in the computer.
For the first tin her life, Rebecca was being completely ignored-by the two people she loved most, her mom
and her son.
She knew when to give them space, so she quietly slipped out of the study and closed the door behind her. Just
as she was about to head downstairs to see if Michael and the others had left, she nearly jumped out of her skin
when she spotted Ryan standing silently right outside the door.
‘Rebecca was speechless-how could he just materialize out of nowhere?’ she thought, startled.
“Did | scare you?” Ryan asked, his voice low.
Rebecca nodded.
She didn’t see him when she first stepped out, but when she turned around, bam-she almost ran smack into
him.
Anyone would've just about jumped out of their skin.
“Sorry,” Ryan said, sounding genuinely sincere. “I usually hang out by the door in stealth mode, just so | can pop
in if your mom ever needs me.”
Rebecca opened her mouth to say something, but stopped short.
‘That's not exactly stealth mode... more like a professional stalker, Rebecca thought, but held her tongue.
She cut off that train of thought before it could go any further-yeah, better not be rude, even in my own head,
Rebecca mentally grumbled.
“Samuel's been learning hacking from Amelia lately,” Ryan said, catching snippets of their conversation inside
and striking up small talk. “He’s really getting the hang of it.”

Rebecca gave a small nod.
Well, that's pretty obvious, Rebecca thought.

Those strings of code and all those screens she couldn’t make sense of... had to be computer stuff, no doubt.
“Rebecca,” Ryan looked at her, about to say something, but caught himself.
Rebecca glanced up, meeting his gaze.
Ryan’s hands lifted slightly, his deep, dark eyes reflecting a storm of emotion as he looked at her. “As your dad,
I'm honestly proud to have a daughter like you. Mind if | get a hug too?”
Rebecca paused.
She didn’t even hesitate. “No.”
“Alright,” Ryan said, not the least bit embarrassed. He lowered his hands, instantly changing the topic. “Want me
to kick them out for you downstairs?”
Rebecca hadn't managed to say anything yet; her lips just parted in surprise.
Ryan didn’t wait for her answer. “I'll get them out of here right away.”
With that, he spun on his heel and strode downstairs, no hesitation at all.
Rebecca: ‘What the...?"
Rebecca felt like her mind just stopped working for a second.
It wasn’t like she’d been MIA for a month or anything. Even when she missed weekends at home, she still video-
chatted with Samuel every night. Everything seemed totally normal whenever she cback-except now
Samuel was slittle hacker prodigy and Mr. Guzman was acting surprisingly laid-back.
All of it... just felt like a whole new world compared to the way things used to be.
She pushed her feelings down and headed for the stairs, trying to wrap her mind around it all.
When Ryan cdownstairs, he was like a whole other person-the shift in his aura was instant. He shot Michael
a cold look, zero politeness: “Michael, if that's all, please see yourself out. The four of us have family matters to
discuss.”
Michael
Max: ?
They both stared at him like he’d just said the earth was flat-completely baffled.
Even on Max's usually frosty face, you could see the slightest crack appear-practically a miracle.
“Wait, we're a family of four now?” Michael repeated, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.

Ryan’s eyes narrowed, his stare practically radiating pressure. “You got something to say about that?”
Michael scoffed, “Really? Rebecca's actually calling you ‘Dad’ these days?”
Ryan just went silent, giving him nothing but a stare.
Michael pushed, “So Amelia’s just forgiven you, is that it?”
Ryan just stared at him, not saying a word.
Sometimes, without his wife and daughter backing him up, Ryan couldn't help but feel a bit powerless-it just
made everything that much harder.
Michael shot back, “By that logic, Rebecca and the rest of us are a family of five-she calls‘Uncle’ now, so
we're the real family here.”
The air around Ryan turned icy cold.
Max, who knew Ryan all too well, nudged Michael with his elbow. “Ahem.”
“What's with the cough?” Michael scoffed, feeling like he'd been crushed by Ryan his whole damn life. Back
when they were young, Amelia and Ryan hogged all the spotlight, leaving him in the shadows. “TellI'm
wrong! After what he pulled back then, you really think Amelia would just let that slide?”
Michael finally found a way to get one over Ryan and wasn’t about to let up. “Family of four? Don’t make me
laugh. If Amelia ever forgives him, I'll twist my own head off and let him kick it around for fun!”
“Don’t mind him,” Max said to Ryan, shooting him a glance. “My dad's got a hair-trigger temper-he just pops off
before thinking.”
Michael was about to fire back on the spot.
Max cut him off with a quick glare.
Michael swallowed his comeback-not that he was afraid of Max, but he really didn't want to start a fight in front
of everyone.
“I don’t take it to heart,” Ryan said.
Max gave a small nod.
The very next second, Ryan whipped out his phone and made a call.
“Four of you, get in here-drag Michael out. We don’t want any sewer rats loitering around,” his voice cold and
merciless.
“Ryan! Don’t you dare cross the line!” Michael shouted, his face burning with humiliation. He'd never been
treated like this in his life.
“Uncle David,” Max said, his gaze turning frosty.

“Keep out of it-this is between your dad and me,” Ryan said, his lips barely moving, his towering presence filling
the room. “If you step in, it won't just be us-it’ll be the Quinn family versus the Guzman family.”
Max tried to jump in, but before he could say a word-
Ryan’s bodyguards cstriding in.
With four burly, intimidating guys suddenly crowding in, Michael straightened up and said quickly, “Don’t trouble
yourself-1 can walk out on my own.”
He left in a huff, throwing Ryan a glare that was pure venom.
