Chapter 735

After a night of reckless indulgence, Glynnis was roused by a waitress in the bathroom of the club. Without even a moment to cleanse herself of the night’s debauchery, she slunk out the back door, with her head hung low.

As she emerged into the daylight, it was already the afternoon of the following day.

There was no way Glynnis could show her face at Windermere Estate in such disarray. So she made a beeline for her perennially reserved luxury suite at the Abernathy Hotel. There, she washed away the grand the scent of men, while her mind was fiickering with vivid memories of the previous night’s fervent encounter with the strapping male model.

Damn, that was one hell of a ride.

Too bad she hadn’t snagged his contact details. She definitely wanted a round two when she had the chance!

After cleaning up and sl*pping into the fresh clothes brought by room service, Glynnis transformed back into the polished Ms. Acacia and called for her driver

to take her back to Windermere Estate.

The moment she stepped through the door, laughter and jovia

parlor.

“Are we expecting guests?” Glynnis asked the butler.

Glynnis was taken aback, realizing that Alston, the fool, was seriously pursuing her sister, just as she had predicted.

She quickly tidied her hair and plastered on a genteel smile before entering the parlor.

“Daddy, I see we’re playing host,” she said as if she had stumbled upon the gathering by chance. “Oh, it’s Mr. and Mrs. Bartley, and Alston. Good afternoon, everyone.”

Frederic subtly scowled at the scent of alcohol on her, but maintained his composure in front of the guests.

The Bartleys, who wouldn’t give Glynnis the tof day even if their lives depended on it, offered her a half–hearted smile and returned to their tea.

Alston, the coward, couldn’t even bring himself to meet her eye, putting on an act of the upright and earnest

suitor.

It was as if he wasn’t the sman who had been caught in a scandalous tryst with Edith just nights before.

“Mr. Frederic, we’re so sorry to hear Marilla isn’t here today,” Mrs. Bartley chirped. “Alston brought her sgifts and was hoping to give them to her in person.”

“Our son’s always been shy around girls, blushing at the mere sight of them,” Mr. Bartley added with a chuckle, while giving his son an encouraging pat on the shoulder.

Glynnis couldn’t help but let out a snort of laughter – the tension in the room was palpable.

The Bartleys‘ smiles froze, and Alston felt his forehead beaded with sweat, fearing Glynnis would expose his

secrets.

“Daddy, I can attest that Mr. and Mrs. Bartley aren’t just boasting. Alston and I went to the sschool, and he truly is a diligent and honest man.”

She gave Alston a knowing look, whose face had turned ashen, “Alston and Marilla would make a perfect match. He’d be an ideal son–in–law for the Abernathy- they’re well–matched in every way.”

Frederic’s expression darkened at her words.

Having overstayed their welcome, the Bartleys quickly took their leave. “Mr. Frederic, once Marilla is back, let’s

set another date for the kids to meet,” Mrs. Bartley insisted, eager to secure the union.

Frederic coughed uncomfortably, “As you’ve seen in the news, my daughter’s mental state.”

“Oh, Mr. Frederic, our visit shows that we don’t mind Marilla’s condition in the slightest. We don’t care at all,” Mr. Bartley interjected with a hearty laugh. “Alston’s been smitten with Marilla since their school days, and after seeing her at the Chambers Group gala, he’s been head over heels. The concerns you have are non–issues for the Bartleys!”

Mrs. Bartley added, “In fact, our Alston and your Marilla are practically childhood sweethearts!”

A cold smirk twisted inside Glynnis.

Childhood sweethearts, indeed, but not with Marilla.

Frederic seemed somewhat relieved by their words.

After leaving Windermere Estate, the Bartleys settled into their luxury car,,with the couple sitting on one side and Alston facing them.

“It seems Mr. Frederic has a good impression of you,” Mr. Bartley said, relaxing into his seat. “You’re right. Although that girl isn’t worthy of you, marrying her could benefit my campaign. And if you becFrederic’s son–in–law, your political career will skyrocket.”

Alston remained stoic, his eyes filled with resentment.

Mr. Bartley sneered at his son’s dejected demeanor. “The girl has her issues, but that’s an advantage. She won’t be able to cause trouble in the Bartley family. In a few years, if her condition worsens, you’ll be her primary guardian, and the Abernathy fortune will be at your disposal.”

“Son, your father’s political future hinges on you,” Mrs. Bartley said, her eyes gleaming with ambition.

Alston looked out the window; recalling Edith’s instructions, he felt his heart sank into darkness.

After the Bartleys had left, Glynnis, who felt like her bones were about to fall apart from the pranks, was about to head upstairs for srest when her father, Frederic, called out to her.

“How did you know they were here to discuss a marriage alliance with me?”

His question caught Glynnis off guard, leaving her momentarily speechless.

After a frantic mental scramble, she stuttered out, “Ah, I saw how eager the Bartleys were, bringing their son over and showering Marilla with gifts. It was obvious they were looking to tie the knot. Dad, are you really planning to marry Marilla off to Mr. Bartley?”

Frederic’s hawk–like eyes narrowed, his enigmatic gaze fiickering ominously.

“At this point, Marilla and Jareth are definitely off the table. My daughter, Marilla, won’t be left hanging on that one branch.”

At his words, a wicked smile curled wildly at the corners of Glynnis‘ mouth.

“But I wonder who could be in cahoots with the Fairhaven group to frmy daughter.”

Frederic clenched his teeth in rage, “I despise backstabbers the most. If I find out who it is, I’ll make sure they beg for mercy, living or dead.”

Her smugness lasted but a fieeting moment before Glynnis‘ breath hitched, her heart leaping to her throat!

Just then, commanding footsteps were heard outside the living room.

Thaddeus walked in, followed by Mr. Murray and Hamilton in his wheelchair.

The man stared unblinkingly at Glynnis‘ tense face, but his words were directed at Frederic.

Indeed, it seems we have a rare instance of seeing eye to eye this time.
