Chapter 1391

She wasn't just laughing at Eugene. She was laughing at herself.

Tand again, she had trusted the wrong person. "Trust isn't something that's just given. It's something you

earn. Just go. There's no reason for you to be down on one knee in front of me. Don't do this. It doesn't mean

anything." "Lydia!" Eugene reached out again, desperately gripping the hem of her coat. He held on tightly, not

daring to let go for even a second, fearing that if he loosened his grip, he would lose her forever.

"Just go home. You'll have your life, and I'll have mine," Lydia said firmly, slipping out of her coat. "I told you

before that we can't even be friends."

Eugene was left holding nothing but the coat, watching helplessly as Lydia walked away with her parents. Mrs.

Fay glanced back several times, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just picked up her pace

and disappeared with Lydia from his sight. Once they were home, Lydia didn't bring up Eugene. Instead, she

dove straight into work. "Mom, Dad, I'd like to start at the company this afternoon. Do you have my position

sorted out?"

Mr. Fay waved a hand. "There's no need to rush. Take a couple of days to rest at hfirst." Although he had

arranged everything, he found himself hesitating at the last moment, reluctant to see her jump into the daily

grind.

"Dad, you've got gray hairs now," Lydia remarked, reaching over to pull a strand out.

"It's just a few," Mr. Fay chuckled. "I saw them last t| looked in the mirror. It's normal for someone my age."

"It doesn't have to be that way. If you took better care, your hair would still be black," Lydia replied gently but

firmly. "know you worry about me, but I can't live under your wings forever. It's my turn to take care of you both."

Seeing her determination, Mr. Fay agreed.

After lunch, Lydia grabbed the oldest car from the garage and drove to the office. Mr. Fay had already

instructed the manager to keep her identity under wraps, so she would

be treated just like any other intern.

The supervisor assigned to her, who had been working for three years, gave her a quick tour around the office

and forwarded a few documents to her computer.

"Lily, your task this afternoon is to format these documents and send them back to me," he said.

"Got it. I'll get started right away." Lydia had taken up the alias "Lily Fay" at work, choosing not to use her real

name.

The afternoon was busy and

fulfilling. After she had completed the document formatting, her supervisor assigned her a few more tasks, which

she handled efficiently. She even stayed late with the team to finish a project, only heading back techer

apartment once everything was done.

That night, no one knocked on her door, and there was no one waiting outside her building. She slept peacefully.

The next morning, Lydia was up early, eager to get back to work. It was her family's company, so besides her

assigned tasks, she was quick to take on additional responsibilities wherever she could.
