Nina's face lit up at first, but then something clicked in her mind, and her smile faltered, turning into a faint trace

of gloom.

“I can’t come,” Nina replied, clutching the invitation between her fingers.

Jerpaused, a little taken aback. “Why not?”

“Tomorrow, Uncle Kristian’s coming to our place to take Jesse andto Jeucwell for a few days,” Nina explained

plainly, handing the invitation back to him. “We won't be back until the 22nd.”

Jerome's expression dulled slightly. It was clear he’d call this way just to ask Nina himself. He'd even gotten

his father to organize the fireworks just so he could invite her.

“If you want, | can ask my mom and dad to set up another one when | cback,” Nina offered.

“It’s okay,” Jersaid with a forced smile. “You can cnext time.” If the date hadn't already been locked in,

he definitely would have asked his dad to change it.

“Here, have a candy,” Nina said, holding one out with a sweet little grin. Even though Jesse didn’t let her eat

candy, she always kept a few on her just in case she had to cheer up a sad friend.

Nina knew him well and tilted her head. “Are you upset? Does Mr. Shaw have any kids at home?”

“Are you going to treat other boys that nicely while you're there?” Jergripped the candy a little tighter,

clearly hoping her kindness wasn’t something she handed out to just anyone.

“Nope,” Nina answered instantly, her eyes crinkling into a smile as bright as sunshine. “Only you and Jasper get

treated this well.”

Nina blinked up at him and agreed, albeit a little reluctantly, “Okay.”

“If you meet someone as good-looking as Nick there, are you going to forget all about me?” Jerome's voice had a

strange urgency to it, a kind of clingy possessiveness that he didn’t even notice himself.

He didn’t realize Nina was still just a little playful girl who didn’t think too hard about things like that.

Nina answered straight from the heart, “No!”

“Then you have to callevery single day,” Jerinsisted, scrambling for an excuse. “If you get stuck on

homework or something, you can ask me.”

“I've got Jesse,” Nina replied cheerfully.
