Chapter 769

When Edward grabbed the phone from me, | thought he'd talk to whoever was calling.

But instead, he just returned it to its place, not even bothering to find out who it was. That actually eased my

nerves a bit.

“It was Ryan calling,” | admitted honestly, not wanting to hide anything.

Edward furrowed his brows and lowered his gaze to me. “What did he talk to you about?”

“He said he regrets bringing us together,” | replied with a faint smile.

“And do you regret it?” Edward’s deep gaze locked on me.

“No,” Victoria shook her head.

Hearing my answer, Edward reached out and gently stroked my hair. “It’s already noon. | need to go check on

Nora.”

| nodded. “She just got better. Make sure you take good care of her.”

“Victoria...” Edward looked at me, hesitating as if he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words. In the

end, he just left without saying anything.

There was something in the way Edward looked atjust now-a kind of helplessness | could actually read in his

eyes. They say love always comes with a sense of guilt, and seeing him struggle to say what he wanted, I could

relate to that, at least a little.

If | really wanted to fight for something, now would be the time. | could pull out all the stops and probably snatch

something from Edward if | really tried.

But if | had to play dirty just to fight for love and money, I'd feel like | was losing who | am.

It’s not that | think I'm above anyone else; | just hate the hassle. Getting into nasty fights with people never

brings any good into your life.

Life is long, and | don’t want to make enemies. I'd rather just keep my head down and do my own thing.

| looked back on everything I'd picked up from my studies and work lately. It was 2015, the economy was on the

rise, and things like food businesses, boutique guesthouses, and even selling products through live streams were

blowing up. All of these were hot investment options.

Back then, | used to stress about how to strike gold in fields | barely knew. But after seeing more of the world, |

realized that if you've got money, talented people will practically line up at your door, eager to help you out and

make sure everyone gets a share of the wealth.

Edward got back just before dark, and the first thing he did was takeout for dinner.

Sitting in the car, watching the lights of New York City pass by, | felt myself calming down.

“What's wrong? You haven't said a word,” Edward asked softly.

I smiled. “It’s nothing, just thinking about what's next.”

“Leave the future to me. I've already talked things through with Jane Leigh and Nora. As long as they agree to

the property arrangements, they won't object to us getting married,” Edward said. He'd gone to see them today

specifically for this, and now everything's settled.

| looked at Edward, my eyes searching his face. “Just how much have you done forbehind the scenes?”

“No matter how much, I'd do it all willingly-and happily,” Edward said in a low, husky voice, then bent down and

pressed a gentle kiss to the top of my head. “Victoria, | never want you to feel like being withis something

painful or unsettling. | just want you to keep living your life in peace.

| stared at him in shock. ‘Does Edward really lovethis much? | never thought that was possible, | thought.

“Edward, you...” | wanted to say something, but the words slipped away. All | could do was lean gently into his

arms.

Edward’s arms tightened around me, pullingcloser.

It was like | was sprecious treasure he'd finally found, and he was afraid that if he held on too tightly, |

might break.

That subtle feeling gathered into a gentle warmth in my heart.

| stayed in Aurelia for three days, and every day, Edward would go spend twith Nora. ‘I can’t help but

wonder ifbeing here is messing with their father-daughter bond, | thought.

On the morning of the third day, | got a text from an unfamiliar number.

It was straight to the point-Jane Leigh said who she was and asked if | was free to meet up for a private chat.
