Chapter 1416

Esther knew James wasn't going to save her. She had said sreally harsh things to him; most people wouldn't

stick around after that.

Feeling let down, Esther quickly thought of what to do next. Just as a man reached out to touch her face with his

chubby hand, Esther held back her revulsion and bit him.

"Ouch! You b*tch! How dare you bite me! You'll regret this!" Angry, the man ripped her shirt.

But before he could go any further, someone grabbed his hand and twisted it behind his back. He winced from

the pain.

Looking up, he saw James holding his hand. Scared, he asked, "Who are you? Why are you meddling?"

James looked over at Esther, who was shaking uncontrollably nearby. Seeing her like that made his heart ache,

and his gaze turned icy. "You're bullying my woman, and you're askingwhy I'm interfering?"

Even though the man felt embarrassed, he stubbornly retorted, "No, you're just sticking your nose where it

doesn't belong. Do you know who | am? You'll be sorry if you mess with me!"

James let out a short laugh, crisp in the quiet night. "Are you threatening me?"

"How dare you!" was all the man could say, too scared to talk back because of James' sudden boldness.

A wise man knows when he's outmatched. Realizing he was in over his head, he fell to his knees. "I'm sorry. |

didn't realize who you were and | offended you. Please letgo."

James released him and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe his hands. Then, he tossed it at the man's face in

disgust. "It's gross having to touch you."

James hated germs. He avoided touching people or their belongings whenever possible. The idea of having

touched the man made him feel sick.

Although the man was seething, he didn't dare show it because of James' warning. He forced a smile. "Yeah, I'm

gross. Sir, can | go now?"

James nodded. "Just leave."

The man was surprised James let him go so easily. He thought maybe Esther wasn't that important to James after

all. Relieved, he thanked James and hurried away.

James then turned to Esther. "Are you okay?" He took off his coat and put it around her shoulders.

The night air was cool, and the coat warmed Esther up a bit. But she felt a deep sadness.

She remembered a tlong ago at a bar when someone bothered her, and James had beaten the person so

badly they ended up in the hospital. Maybe she really wasn't important to James now, and that's why he let the

man go so easily.

Indeed, people and things change. Nothing stayed the same.

James noticed her sad look right away. He lifted her chin and saw her eyes were full of tears.

He had planned to tease her, but his heart softened seeing her cry. So he gently asked, " What's wrong? Why are

you crying?"

Esther wasn't even sure why she was suddenly crying. "No, | was just scared," she said, wiping her tears.

James wasn't convinced. He stroked her hair and explained, "I didn't let him go just like that. | didn't choose not

to avenge you. My men are waiting for him down the road. He's going to have a rough night."
