Felix was gone, just like that, leaving without a second glance back at her.
Carol stood there, caught in the chill of the outside air, her head pounding even harder than before.
She was definitely running a fever. Standing there, her legs felt like jelly.
She left the neighborhood and hailed a cab, but instead of heading back to her apartment, she went to the Miller estate.
Abner was rarely at home, leaving Carol in the care of a string of nannies at the Miller's sprawling mansion.
After spending the night with Felix, all Carol got was a cold suggestion to think things over. That had stung.
The fever raged for two days, leaving her in a daze.
When she finally cto, the first thing she did was check her phone.
Not a single message, not even a spam text. Silence.
It seemed like every effort to connect with Felix was one-sided.
He'd never reached out to her, not even after they'd slept with each other.
Restless in bed, she couldn't make sense of it. It felt like she'd been used.
For a whole week, she fumed, her thoughts consumed by him.
But Felix had vanished from her world.
Sitting at the dining table, she still wasn't herself.
Abner finally noticed.
"Out of cash?"
"Dad, | think I'm heading for a breakup."
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt"Mhm."
Abner didn't seem fazed. He pulled out a sleek black credit card and laid it before her.
"Get yourself something nice, maybe check out that actor who just snagged an Oscar. Not a bad looker. If you like him, have a
fling."
Carol's lips twitched as she pocketed the card.
"Forget it, Dad. | can't explain. This tit's for real."
Abner folded his newspaper, "I'm serious too, Carol. Only a woman with no self-respect cries over a breakup. A beautiful woman
goes shopping. If you run short, call me. The Miller fortune can afford your whims for generations."
He added with a final note, "Just don't start your own business."
Carol felt a warmth in her chest. She knew he was trying to comfort her.
Abner had always been there, rushing hfrom meetings across the country if she had a fever as a child.
Their relationship had always been like this.
Card in pocket, Carol got into her car and drove to the barbecue restaurant.
She had considered going to Felix's, but what would she say?
Upon arrival, the manager greeted her with a roll of the eyes.
"A week without a shift and you text your leave? Who do you think you are, Carol? You're fired!"
Well, looks like she'd need to find another steakhouse gig.
When she asked for her last paycheck, she got another eye-roll.
"You expect pay after all those days off? Be glad I'm not docking you. You barely worked. Now scram. Guess you've moved up in
the world and don't need this waitress job."
Fine. Carol wasn't about to squabble over a hundred bucks.
Back in her car, she felt stifled.
A thousand voices told her to give up, but being ignored for a week only intensified her feelings for Felix.
Anger and heartache mingled. Other men would at least fake concern after sleeping with a woman, even without paying. Felix just
disappeared.
Sitting in the driver's seat, she drove back to her apartment, tempted to ditch the place. Why suffer for a man?
But at the apartment door, she saw him.
Felix, looking worn, leaned against the door, apparently waiting for her.
Carol's heart skipped a beat, and she quickened her pace.
"Felix?"
He shifted, his gaze landing on her. "Where have you been?"
Carol felt hopelessly led by her emotions.
"lI went hto deal with that money issue with my mom. How long have you been waiting?"
She asked cautiously, unlocking her door.
"Two days."
His voice was flat. He stood outside until she invited him in, respectfully waiting.
A pang of tenderness hit Carol. How could one person make her swing from disappointment to concern so quickly?
He'd waited at her door for two days without calling?
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Why didn't you call? Have you eaten?"
She pulled him inside, her tone urgent. "I'll make you sspaghetti."
"That day, | told you to think it over for a week before givingan answer. You never did."
Carol regretted not reaching out first, now assuming he'd been avoiding her.
Her heart ached uncontrollably. She wanted to rush into his arms.
She turned toward the kitchen.
"I'll make spaghetti, then we can talk."
But before she could move, he wrapped his arms around her from behind.
"Have you decided? | can't wait any longer for your answer."
His chin rested on her shoulder, his breath warm on her neck.
Carol's resolve melted. He had a way of stirring her heart at just the right moments.
Even his presence there, just as she considered giving up on him, amplified the faint flicker of affection to a roaring flame.
She really liked Felix. He knew just how to appeal to her tastes.
