Chapter 256 I Can’t Take It
Maia pursed her lips. She could hear his heart pounding.
She was about to shout at him when he put her down and let her stand by herself. Then, he started checking for injuries before
she could say anything.
“You’re hurt.” His frown deepened. That was when Maia noticed that there was a cut at her feet. Was it the work of the billboard
from when the elevator dropped sharply? Anyway, it was just a flesh wound. She was tougher than that.
“I’m fine.” Maia said nonchalantly. Then, she asked, confused, “D–Didn’t you leave?”
Cedric was a little nervous. “We should take care of your wound first.” Then, he swept her off her feet before she knew what was
happening.
“P–Put me down, Cedric. People are watching!”
“What do you mean?”
Maia was stunned to see that the group of people at the staircase had already dispersed. When did they leave? How could she
not have heard anything?
Cedric carried her to the stairs and started climbing.
“There’s another working elevator. You don’t have to climb the stairs.” They’re on the fourth
floor and she stayed on the sixteenth floor. That was twelve floors above them.
“They should really change to a new set of elevators. It’s safer to use the stairs now.‘
Maia was stunned at that. What he said was true, but it would also mean that he would have to
climb
up
twelve floors!

“Well. You can put me down so I can walk by myself.”
“You’re hurt.”
Maia could not care less about that. “It’s just a minor injury. It doesn’t affect me. Can you be more reasonable, Cedric?”
“I’m reasonable, but I just can’t take it.”
Maia was puzzled. She asked, “What do you mean?”
“I was trembling with fear when I heard that you were trapped in the elevator. Then, I felt so relieved when I learned that you’re

safe and sound. I know it’s just a flesh wound and you can walk fine, but I don’t want you to feel any pain. Not even a little.”

“I’ll gladly sacrifice myself if it means you get to live to see another day.”
Maia was completely speechless. She raised her head and found their eyes locked with each other’s. Something stirred in her
heart.
She quickly lowered her gaze. Her heart was beating fast.
He carried her all the way to the sixteenth floor without a break. He barely broke a sweat.
“Get the door.”
Maia was stunned..

“If you don’t want me to go into your place, then I’ll clean your wounds right here.” What mattered most was getting her injuries
treated. He was willing to make all sorts of compromises for her sake.
Maia felt sorry for him.
“Put me down so I can key in the password.”
“Okay.”
He put her down gently. He turned around when Maia was keying in the password. She noticed this and wondered. It was so
unlike him to act this way.
Cedric was changing. Was he doing it for her?
He turned around when she was done. Then, he lifted her again and walked straight into her apartment. He nudged the door
closed with his foot and walked toward the couch.
“Where’s the first aid kit?”
“Over there. It’s in the third drawer.‘
Cedric got the first aid kit, set her feet on the coffee table, and knelt on the ground to clean her wounds. Maia looked at him. The
icy shield she erected in her heart began to thaw.
“There you go.” He packed up the first aid kit when he was done.
“Thank you,” she said.

Cedric smiled and reached out to touch her hair, but then he stopped and pulled his hand back. “Were you scared today?”
Maia shook her head, “The business world is much scarier than the elevator in a power outage. There’s nothing to be scared
about. I’ve died once. Do you think I’ll be spooked by an elevator?”

He watched as she spoke, and said lovingly, “Who screamed in the elevator, I wonder?”

Maia blushed at that. Here she was thinking he had changed. It looked like he was still the nasty man she knew. She saw him
sneering and decided that she had no intention of entertaining him further.
“Get some rest. Goodnight.”
Maia nodded. Cedric opened the door and found Baz waiting there with a document in his hand.
He saw Cedric and said respectfully, “I’m here to give Ms. Maia this, Mr. Cedric. She left it in the elevator. The technicians have
repaired it. They’ll install a new set of elevators before Ms. Maia goes to work tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll head in and give this document to Ms. Maia now. I think she had trouble walking,” Baz claimed. He saw that Maia was sitting
on the couch. Cedric nodded and he did exactly what he said.
“Here you go, Ms. Maia.”
“Thanks,” she said.
Baz whispered when he was about to turn around and leave, “Mr. Cedric is having some stomach pains, Ms. Maia. He won’t take
any medicine. My guess is he’s holding in the pain. Can you please say something to him?”
Maia looked at the door and there was no one there. Did he leave already? He always had stomach issues, but with effort he
had managed to overcome them. Had they come back again?
She frowned and cast her mind back to the moment when he gave everything he had to save her.

Fine. She would consider it as repaying his favor. Then, she stood up swiftly.
Baz was concerned, “Is it okay for you to walk, Ms. Maia?”
“I can handle it.” It was just a minor injury, after all. With that, she walked straight to the door.
She arrived at the lobby and found him on the floor.
“Cedric!”
He was in deep pain. She shouted again.
“Cedric. Cedric?”
His eyes flickered open. He seized her hand when he saw her.

“I’m still alive,” he said, casually.
“We have to send you to the hospital!” Maia shouted. “Send him to the hospital, Baz. He needs to be checked by the doctors!”
Baz rushed out. He was about to do what Maia said when Cedric stopped him.
“I’m not going to the hospital.”
