As the sky outside darkened, their meal was coming to a close. Verruckt wasn’t much of a drinker, so he wasn’t
sure if it was the alcohol making his mind feel cloudy.
“I should head out,” he said, rising from his seat and moving toward the door.
Allison surreptitiously checked the time. This was the latest the roofie should have kicked in, yet he somehow
managed to hold on until now. It was his resistance, built up in the island's lab, that had slowed the effect.
Allison stood up to help him. “You look drunk.”
She took Verruckt’s right hand and gently nudged him to lean on her. It was the perfect chance to slip in his
fingerprint.
But Verruckt was heavier than she expected, especially when he leaned into her without thinking. Allison had to
wrap her arms around his waist to keep him steady. The strong scent of wine mixed with the sharp cold of the

From Verruckt’s point of view, he could just make out Alice’s arms wrapped around his waist. Though there was
no scent of perfume, his heart began to race, its beat growing louder as if it would burst from his chest. What
was he thinking?
He looked into her pale eyes and soft, pink lips. She was shy and anxious, but she would face her fears to save
him. Her smile brought a sense of peace. Now, her eyes were fixed on his, reflecting only the two of them.
A forbidden feeling began to stir inside him. Alice was his. For Verruckt, if there was something he wanted, he
would take it, no matter the cost.
“What are you doing?” Verruckt caught Allison’s hand and shoved her against the cold wall. Allison felt the chill
creeping up her back, replying timidly, “I didn’t do anything.”
As she spoke, she quietly tucked the fingerprint tool away. But Verruckt gently lifted her chin, his icy, slender
fingers pressing against her throat. He stared at Alice, captivated by the depth in her eyes and the way her lips
moved as she spoke. Even the air around her seemed to draw him in.
His head grew heavy, and all sounds faded, leaving only her in his vision.
Allison’s brow furrowed. “Mr. Shaw, I'll get you smedicine to help sober you up...”
She sensed danger, instinctively. It was too close. At this distance, a small push could snap her neck in an
instant. It was hard to tell how drunk Verruckt was.
But he didn’t seem to care about her words. His crimson eyes stayed locked on hers. “Do you want endless
wealth?”
