“Leon, will I die?” Millie’s question rang in his ears.
She was truly gone!
The sound of the woman’s weeping drew Marcus’ attention. He glanced toward Leon and Lois, striding toward them with simmering anger. What were they doing here?

Marcus’ accusing glare unnerved Lois. “I wanted to save Millie, but there wasn’t enough time.”
“Why did she chere?” Marcus’ voice held restrained fury.
“L asked her to come,” Leon admitted.
Marcus’ gaze narrowed. “What did you want her to do here?”
“The kidnappers took Lois, thinking you were wealthier and planning to extort you.

His heart ached, ready to shatter into fragments. The blackened corpse before him was Millie!
Darkness descended, the rescue team departed, while Marcus was standing resolute.
Approaching, Derek advised, “Mr. Thomas, night is falling. We should leave.”
In a prolonged hush, just as Derek presumed Marcus would remain silent, Marcus finally spoke.
“Derek, has the autopsy report been released?” Is that body hers?”
