“That explains it.” All of a sudden, Winnie recalled Yulissa’s last words before her death. “No wonder
Yulissa said that the truth will forever be buried upon her death and that I’ll never have a proper
relationship with Xavier. If Christopher hadn’t survived and the ring hadn’t seen the light of day, Xavier
would forever carry the guilt of killing him. It would have become an unremovable thorn in our
relationship,” Winnie murmured to herself, her heart filled with a mix of bitter emotions.
When she subconsciously turned to look at Xavier, it was to see the latter staring back at her.
Without saying another word, he reached out his hand to pull her toward him.
Wrapped in his embrace, Winnie couldn’t help but shed tears. “You didn’t push Christopher off the
building. You’re innocent.”
“Mmm-hmm.” Xavier leaned in to give her a peck on the forehead before replying in a deep voice, “I
know. I have clearly not let you down.”
“Yes, you didn’t, but it was I who failed you. I’m sorry to have blindly believed Granny all this while and
wrongly accused you. I must have made you miserable. I’m truly sorry.”
“It’s fine. It’s all in the past now.” Xavier stroked Winnie’s long hair to comfort her. “I understand that you
must be feeling terrible now, so there’s no need to apologize to me.”
Winnie responded with a gentle shake of her head. “I insist as both you and Christopher deserve it.
Considering Granny’s current condition and the fact that I’m her guardian, I must apologize for the
harm she has done to the two of you.”
“Fine. Go ahead and do what you need to.” Xavier’s support for Winnie was unconditional. “I accept
your apology. Once Captain Bennett has recovered and can see us, we’ll visit him together. After all,
I’m still responsible one way or another.”

“All right!” Cognizant that the room was filled with surveillance cameras, Winnie hastily wiped her tears
dry before peeling herself away from Xavier’s embrace.
Handing Winnie a tissue, Greta remarked, “I have heard of the case involving Mdm. Sumner and Stuart
before. Even though there’s no way we can hold her accountable given her current condition, the truth
coming out is an ideal conclusion to the matter. Furthermore, I believe everything will be better going
forward.”
“Thank you, Greta.” Winnie expressed her sincere gratitude as she took the tissue from Greta’s hand.
“Thank you for bringing Christopher back and sharing with us the truth.”
Breaking into a smile, Greta continued, “There’s no need to thank me, Ms. Garland. I’m just doing my
job. Protecting my comrades, countrymen, the truth, and justice is the sacred duty of all members of
the police force. By the way…”
Changing the topic, Greta added, “After getting Captain Bennett medical attention, I returned to
Yeringham to search the rooftop for the ring as Captain Bennett had dropped it by accident in his
struggle with Mr. Fairchild.
“Thereafter, I discovered that Harold and his men never left Yeringham. I didn’t know what they were
planning until Leandro came over. Only then did I learn that they had gathered to plot their comeback
while finding a way to exact revenge on you. Upon my return, I reported the matter to the organization,
and as of now, my colleagues have yet to track Harold and his men down. Therefore, it pays for you to
be extra cautious since Harold is a cunning and vicious man. No one can predict how and when he will
strike next.”
“I’m well aware because someone has given me the heads-up.” Staring at Greta, Winnie curled the
corner of her lips. “It’s just that I didn’t expect you guys to be keeping an eye on him still.”
“That’s part of our job. Given what a dangerous man he is, we have to arrest him the moment he
crosses our border. Moreover, you helped Captain Bennett complete his mission and provided us with
valuable intel. It’s only natural that you’re an important asset to be protected. We will definitely do our
best to ensure your safety. It’s just that we have no leads at the moment, and my colleagues have to be
at their respective stations. As a result, they’re unable to keep an eye on you twenty-four-seven.
Having said that, you can continue to have total trust in the Chanaean police.”
“Yes, I have the utmost confidence in their abilities.” Winnie looked at Greta with glistening eyes. “Every
officer I know has been exemplary. Regardless of whether they were men or women, they have shown
themselves to be heroes of the bravest order.”
“Thank you.” A tinge of red crept into Greta’s eyes when she saw the look on Winnie’s face.
These are the fellow citizens my comrades and I have sworn to protect! Their trust serves as the
biggest source of faith and motivation in our line of work.
That trip was an extremely productive one for Winnie.
The fact that Christopher was still alive helped to diminish the pain that Jacinta’s treachery wrought
upon her.
On their journey home, she chatted excitedly, even picking the restaurant for lunch.
As for Josiah, who had arrived in a car driven by a plainclothes policeman, he had squeezed himself
into the back of Xavier’s car.
When he heard of the restaurant suggested by Winnie, he objected at once, “Let’s not go there.
Everything’s perfect with the restaurant other than its long queues where even billionaires like us are
not exempt from having to make reservations. Even if we were to make one now, there would still be a
hundred people in front of us, and by the time we’re seated, it would already be time for dinner.”

Winnie was rendered speechless.
After throwing an annoyed glance at Josiah through the rearview mirror, Xavier ridiculed him
mercilessly, “Since when have you become a billionaire?”
Josiah’s eyes rolled in response. “What’s the point in trying to lord your wealth over me? Just continue
driving.”
Xavier let out a chuckle, for he was indeed in a very good mood.
Ignoring Josiah, he asked the woman of his life in a gentle tone, “Do you really want to go there?”
“Not if we need to queue. I just saw that it has plenty of good reviews while browsing. The food looks
great and is to my liking, but we can always go there some other time. Anyway, I found another
restaurant in the same mall. Let’s go there instead.”
“Sure.” After grunting in acknowledgment, Xavier brought the car to a halt by the side of the road.
His actions took Winnie and Josiah by surprise. “Why are we stopping?”
Xavier unbuckled his seatbelt and proceeded to undo Winnie’s.
Turning toward Josiah at the back, he instructed, “You drive.”
Josiah was taken aback. “Why?”
“I have something really important to deal with right now,” Xavier replied with an emotionless look.
“Okay. What’s so important?” Josiah asked skeptically.
“It’s a secret!”
His answer caused Josiah’s brows to furrow. “D*mn it, Xavier. I’m really disappointed. Since when are
there secrets in this tight-knit bond of ours?”
“Get lost!” Xavier was already out of the car and had opened Josiah’s door. “Stop making such
suggestive remarks in front of my wife.”
