My hand go to touch her stomach, running gently over where our baby was nestled inside. There was no way I could not mark her now, she was pregnant. "I should have told you everything," I continued, my voice pained. "I should have and now I placed you in the very position I was fighting to save you from." Avery made a small sound in her throat and shifted, her face scrunching up as if she could sense and feel my distress. My heart constricted. I held her closer, tighter as if my embrace alone could shield her from the consequences of my actions.
She will be okay Xade,' Xaden's voice pushed in my head, cutting through my thoughts.' She's stronger than you give her credit for.' It was like he knew I needed to hear these words right now and I knew he was right. Avery was strong and as much as I want to always be the one to protect her, I knew she could handle anything on her own.
But that still doesn't make it any less painful to see her this way.
