It was late at night. | lay on the bed with Thane beside me, but he hadn't said a single word to me. | had
expected to be punished; maybe he was only devising ssuitable punishments to administer, that would
explain why he had been so silent. | didn’t think he was sleeping.

“Go back to sleep, Riley,” he says, but the last thing | could do now was sleep.
“Would you punishfor what | did earlier?” That was a stupid question. Of course | would be punished; maybe
| would bear sscars like Freya. No, | wouldn't allow that. But then what will | do to stop it?, fight him?, run?,

| could do nothing.
“Is this what is keeping you awake?” He asks, and though | wasn’t looking at him, from his tone, | knew there
must be a smirk on his face.
“There are many other questions.”
“Like?” he asked.
“Your mother talked about you being punished for doing the forbidden.”
“You shouldn't be worried about that.”
“You are the Alpha...”
“And he is the Alpha King. There are these ancient wolves called the elders; they would have to enforce some
kind of punishment. That's why the old man wouldn't let go of his title easily; he knows the power the crown
comes with.” Thane explained.

“It is expected of me, but it's nothing, just sregular whipping - Or whatever those elders cup with,

And | relaxed a bit. Just then, his hands trailed on my bruised skin, and | gasped out in pain.
“You are hurt,” he states, taking off the blanket.
“No, I'm not hurt; is nothing really?” | tried, but he ignored me, rolling up my gown carefully till it was above my
chest.
| watched his eyes darken at the bruises that went up my cleavages.
“He did this on purpose,” Thane said.
“No, | tried blocking Freya.”
“He could have stopped if he wanted to, but he didn’t; he wanted you hurt, just to annoy me.’

Thane said, and | knew he was right. | had seen it in Slade’s eyes, he wantedhurt, but | had already done so
much harm that | didn’t want to add to that.
“I'm sure he didn’t mean to,” | say, and Thane doesn’t believe that one bit. He knew what happened, and he
must also know that | was just trying to cover up for Slade only to ease the problem | had already created.
“Stay,” he says as he rises from the bed and disappears into the bathroom. He returns with a white tube in his
hands. “This might hurt a little, Thane said, and | nodded, allowing him to rub the white lotion on my skin. The
pain calmost instantly, and | gripped the bed. “It will heal faster this way,” he explains.
“Thank you,” | replied. My voice shook from the pain, but it was over after a few minutes.
“Riley, | want you to promiseone thing.”
“And what is that?” | asked-
“That next tyou'will walk away,” he says, and | understand what he meant.
“I... I...” | stammered, “Do you know why | couldnt walk away?” | asked
